TIME's Person of the Year is an annual designation that has been a tradition since 1927. It is given to the person, group, or concept that has had the most significant impact on the headlines, whether for good or bad. In 2019, TIME chose President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the "Spirit of Ukraine" as its Person of the Year.

This year, the publication has a shortlist of nine people up for the title. Singer Taylor Swift is among the candidates. She is no stranger to the TIME cover, appearing on a 2017 "Silence Breakers” list of people who spoke out against sexual misconduct in Hollywood.

The Hollywood strikers are also up for the award. The Writers Guild of America and Screen Actors Guild-AFTRA went on strike earlier this year, slowing the production of shows and movies. But they could still perform some live performances, and the release of their concert movie this year became the highest-grossing film in history.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is another contender. He's been on the TIME 100 list multiple times, including in 2022. The magazine notes that the fight against Ukraine has changed him. Zelenskyy, who aspired to be a comedian and actor before becoming president, has lost his quick movements and chattiness in favor of a more aggressive posture.

This year’s TIME 100 includes 16 climate leaders, a record number for the annual list. The group consists of activists, politicians, and CEOs. The list also includes athletes like Patrick Mahomes II, Lionel Messi, and Kylian Mbappe, as well as artists like Doja Cat and Lea Michele.

Entrepreneur Sam Altman is on the TIME 100 shortlist, as he has impacted technology as co-founder of OpenAI. The company has helped develop artificial intelligence to assist with speech, vision, and movement.

There are several candidates for the Person of the Year award, including the Trump prosecutors who have been working tirelessly to build a case against the President. Another candidate is British King Charles III, who recently ascended to the throne as the oldest monarch in the nation's history.

Jerome Powell, chairman of the Federal Reserve, is also on the TIME 100 shortlist this year. The magazine notes that he has worked to move the country toward a soft landing, which can ease inflation without prompting a recession. The Person of the Year award winner will be announced on 6 December. Previous winners of the accolade have included former U.S. Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Albert Einstein, and Queen Elizabeth II.
