JTFMax:
It would be impossible for average swimmers to swim a single lane in the largest pool in the world because the pool is a whopping 120,000 square meters in size and correspondingly long. We also reveal which pool is already in the starting blocks to break the world record.
Whoever guessed that the largest pool in the world is in Dubai, the city of usual superlatives, is wrong. Located in the popular holiday resort of Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt, the gigantic pool was awarded the world record by the Guinness Book of Records in 2015 as the "largest man-made lagoon." While the huge swimming pool is already in use, the surrounding buildings are still under construction. When asked by the press, a spokesman for Crystal Lagoons announced this. The global company has developed a patented system for creating saltwater lagoons and has built the most significant and second largest pool on earth.
The second largest pool in the world is 1013 meters long.
The second largest pool in the world
From 2009 to 2015, the pool at the San Alfonso del Mar resort in Chile held the world record. The pool is more than a kilometer long and covers a total area of eight hectares. Resort guests can even go sailing, surfing, and kayaking. The pool, which is 3.5 meters deep at its deepest point, holds an enormous amount of 250 million liters of water. According to the resort's website, guests bathe in the pool at a pleasant 26 degrees water temperature - nine degrees more than in the directly adjacent Pacific Ocean. In addition to kayaking and sailing courses, the resort also offers diving and swimming courses and aqua fitness.
Where does the water for the world's largest pools come from?
"The Lagoon of Sharm el Sheikh is supplied with saline water from wells in the desert that have no other use, creating a tropical desert oasis," said the Crystal Lagoons spokesman. The system pumps water from the well into the pool, filtered and drained daily. As a result, you hardly need any chemicals to keep the pool clean, and the water is particularly clear. The second largest pool in the world in Chile is also filled with salt water. In this case, the water comes from the Pacific.
According to the online portal "Snopes," the construction costs for the gigantic pool complex in Chile alone amounted to 1.5 billion euros. In addition, there are 4 million euros annually for the maintenance of the filter and the pump systems.
The next record pool is almost finished.
It should only be a matter of time before the Guinness World Record is broken again because the Crystal Lagoon says it is currently building a 400,000 square meter pool with the same technology - and - how could it be otherwise - in Dubai. However, tourists will not enjoy swimming in this case, as the vast saltwater pool is part of a private condominium called Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum City.
