Djokovic DETHRONED after freaking out!
Tennis dominator Novak Djokovic (36) loses a dramatic Wimbledon final 6: 1, 6: 7 (6: 8), 1: 6, 6: 3, 4: 6 against world number one Carlos Alcaraz (20). After 4:42 hours, the Spaniard turned his first match point into his second Grand Slam title after the US Open 2022.
In the fifth set, Djokovic's anger has to come out; he smashes his racket on the net post.
"I've said it before: it's a special title when you win against Novak. You inspired me, winning titles when I was just born. And I also wanted to go here," says Alcaraz after the match.
Before the final, the Serb was unbeaten for an unbelievable 34 (!) games in Wimbledon, winning the last four Wimbledon titles since 2018. The tournament was canceled in 2020 due to Corona. He lost his previous match in 2017, in the quarterfinals against the Czech Tomas Berdych (37), where he had to give up.
Bitter: If he won, Djokovic would have replaced Alcaraz as number one in the world, drawn level with Roger Federer (41) with eight Wimbledon titles, and equalized Margaret Court's 24 Grand Slam victories (81).
Alcaraz needs half an hour (!) to win his first game 1:5. It lasts until the second set before the Spaniard takes the lead for the first time. The almost insurmountable Djokovic plays flawlessly and always has an answer to Alcaraz's punches. The frustrated Spaniard poisoned his box at the end of the first sentence.
But suddenly Djokovic wobbles, loses set two in the tie-break, and is dominated 1: 6 by the Spaniard in the third set. The fifth game alone lasts an unbelievable 26 (!) minutes.
But the Serb fights back and grabs set four. In the decisive fifth set, however, the young Spaniard has the better nerves and immediately secures the title in his first final on the holy lawn in Wimbledon.
On the other hand, Djokovic was utterly frustrated and smashed his racket on the net post after a slight mistake and the break to 1: 2.
After triumphing at the Australian and French Open, Djokovic lost his chance to win all four major tournaments within a year. This has only happened six times in tennis history. Number seven has to wait for the time being.
And Alcaraz? The upcoming superstar continues his rocket career (youngest world number one ever) and is now a member of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club like every Wimbledon winner. " Roger Federer didn't come in because he forgot his badge. I hope that doesn't happen to me," said Alcaraz in his winning speech.
