Irish singer Sinead O'Connor has died. This was reported by several British media on Wednesday, citing the family of the 56-year-olds.

In a statement to The Irish Times, the singer's family said: "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinead. Her family and friends are devastated and have asked not to be disturbed at this difficult time.”

O'Connor leaves behind three children. Her son Shane passed away last year at the age of 17.

The singer rose to fame with the Prince cover of Nothing Compares 2 U. The song was named the world's most-played single at the 1990 Billboard Music Awards.

Her trademark: the shaved head. She began her career as a street singer in Dublin. Sinéad O'Connor released a total of ten studio albums. The musical style on the records ranges from traditional Irish music to blues and reggae.

Their first album, The Lion and the Cobra, was released in 1987 and entered the top 40 in the US and UK.

Her follow-up album, I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got, including Nothing Compares 2 U, was a #1 hit.

The Irish woman had suffered numerous strokes of fate in her life. In January 2022, her son Shane died after escaping from the hospital. There he was placed in a psychiatric ward because of suicidal thoughts.

Sinéad O'Connor changed her name several times - in 2018, she converted to Islam, and from then on, she called herself Shuhada' Davitt.

After her son's death, she tweeted: "Have lived as an undead night creature ever since. He was the love of my life, the lamp of my soul. We were a soul in two halves. He was the only person who ever loved me unconditionally."

O'Connor had also attempted suicide several times. Her mother physically abused her as a child. "She kicked the shit out of me," O'Connor said in an interview with famous US talk star and psychologist Dr. Phil (72) 2018. Her mother was addicted to drugs.

According to her statement, the mother accused her of being "malicious" and being the reason why her father left her mother. According to her mother, she should never have been born.

At the age of 13, she moved in with her father.

O'Connor was expelled for shoplifting and attended the Sisters of Our Lady of Charity boarding school. There she is said to have been abused by clergy members.

In 2017 she changed her name to Magda Davitt. She wanted to free herself from the "curse of her parents." In 2018 she converted to Islam and changed her name to Shuhada' Davitt. The name means "martyr". She later changed her last name again – to Sadaqat.

Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar (44) paid tribute to her, saying that her music "was loved all over the world and her talent was unsurpassed and incomparable."
