WASHINGTON —Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland will travel to California and Nevada this week to highlight how the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law will help local, state and Tribal communities tackle the climate crisis while creating good-paying union jobs, advancing environmental justice and boosting local economies. The Department is focused on implementing programs as quickly and efficiently as possible, coordinating with states, Tribes and across the federal family to get much-needed resources to areas across the country.
The trip comes as Secretary Haaland delivers keynote remarks on Thursday, Dec. 9, at the Western Governors Association Winter Meeting. Comments and meetings with governors will focus on how federal and state leaders can work in partnership to get infrastructure investments out to communities as quickly as possible. Assistant Secretary – Indian Affairs Bryan Newland will also participate in a panel on how the Department addresses the crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples. During a five-day series of events, Secretary Haaland will visit several cities to meet with community and elected leaders to discuss how the infrastructure law will fund efforts to address intensifying drought, wildfires, flooding and legacy pollution.
Wednesday, Dec. 8
Secretary Haaland will visit San Diego, Calif., to announce new efforts to increase access to the outdoors consistent with America the Beautiful initiative and invest in the vast infrastructure that sustains our public lands and national parks.
Friday, Dec. 10
Secretary Haaland will visit Los Angeles, Calif., to discuss infrastructure investments in plugging orphan wells and addressing legacy pollution in urban communities.
Saturday, Dec. 11
Secretary Haaland will visit Palm Springs, Calif., to tour onshore renewable energy projects and discuss the importance of investing in a clean energy economy.
Sunday, Dec. 12
Secretary Haaland and Assistant Secretary for Water and Science Tanya Trujillo will visit Las Vegas, Nev., to meet with stakeholders and highlight investments that will help address the worsening drought crisis.
