Relive Hollywood's Golden Age:

Join us this Sunday at 3 pm for the return of the Palm Springs Cultural Center's Screwball Sundays film series. This popular series showcases classic screwball comedies from Hollywood's golden age and is screened as a Sunday matinee at the Historic Camelot Theatre. The series began in March with a screening of It Happened One Night, which was well-attended. This weekend's feature is Libeled Lady, a hilarious gem from the 1930s that boasts a stellar cast, including Myrna Loy, Jean Harlow, William Powell, and Spencer Tracy.

You can now buy tickets for Screwball Sundays. The screenings will start on May 21^st, every Sunday, from 3 pm until June 18^th.

The series is presented by the Palm Springs Cultural Center and the Film Society of Screwball Comedy (FSOSC), which is a Palm Springs-based non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the art, science, and history of screwball comedy. The screenings will feature live introductions and post-screening discussions with FSOSC Founder Aliece Pickett. It's an excellent opportunity for attendees to explore each film's themes, techniques, and legacy with fellow fans and experts. 107.3 Mod FM sponsors the series.

Hey there! I learned from Program Director Lauren Wolfer that Screwball Sundays are a huge hit! It's incredible how these classic comedies always stay in style. Who doesn't love a good laugh with friends while watching these movies on the big screen?

Did you know that screwball comedy started in the 1930s and 1940s? These films were known for their witty dialogue, fast-paced action, and hilarious plot twists. They often revolved around misunderstandings, mistaken identities, and funny schemes. Plus, they had strong female characters and much romantic tension. No wonder they were such a big part of Hollywood's golden era! And even today, people of all ages love these timeless classics.

You can now buy tickets for Screwball Sundays. The screenings will start on May 21^st, every Sunday, from 3 pm until June 18^th, when the series ends with the Barbara Stanwyck classic Ball of Fire. The screenings will be held at the Palm Springs Cultural Center's Historic Camelot Theatre at 2300 E Baristo Rd. This theatre is a popular destination for movie enthusiasts because of its giant screens in the Coachella Valley and state-of-the-art sound system.

May 21 - LIBELED LADY (1936) starring Jean Harlow, William Powell, Myrna Loy, and Spencer Tracy

When a major newspaper accuses wealthy socialite Connie Allenbury (Myrna Loy) of being a home-wrecker, and she files a multi-million-dollar libel lawsuit, the publication's frazzled head editor, Warren Haggerty (Spencer Tracy), must find a way to turn the tables on her. Soon Haggerty's harried fiancée, Gladys Benton (Jean Harlow), and his dashing friend Bill Chandler (William Powell) are in on a scheme that aims to discredit Connie, with amusing and unexpected results.

May 28 - ADAM’S RIB (1949) starring Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy

A courtroom rivalry finds its way into the household when prosecuting lawyer Adam Bonner (Spencer Tracy) faces off against his wife, Amanda (Katharine Hepburn), who happens to be a defense attorney. Working on opposite sides of a lawsuit where a woman (Judy Holliday) has shot her cheating husband (Tom Ewell), Adam and Amanda are determined to win the case, and their home becomes the setting for comical showdowns, with neither spouse willing to relent.

June 4 - HIS GIRL FRIDAY (1940), starring Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell

When hard-charging New York newspaper editor Walter Burns (Cary Grant) discovers that his ex-wife, investigative reporter Hildy Johnson (Rosalind Russell), has gotten engaged to milquetoast insurance agent Bruce Baldwin (Ralph Bellamy), he unsuccessfully tries to lure her away from tame domestic life with a story about the impending execution of convicted murderer Earl Williams. But when Hildy discovers Williams may be innocent, her reporter instincts take over.

June 11 - MY MAN GODFREY (1936), starring Carole Lombard and William Powell 

Fifth Avenue socialite Irene Bullock (Carole Lombard) needs a "forgotten man" to win a scavenger hunt, and no one fits that description more than Godfrey Park (William Powell), who resides in a dump by the East River. Irene hires Godfrey as a servant for her riotously unhinged family, to the chagrin of her spoiled sister, Cornelia (Gail Patrick), who tries her best to get Godfrey fired. But, as Irene falls for her new butler, Godfrey turns the tables and teaches the frivolous Bullocks a lesson or two.

June 18 - BALL OF FIRE (1941) starring Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck

Hoping to update his chapter on modern slang, encyclopedia writer Professor Bertram Potts (Gary Cooper) ventures into a chic nightclub. Inside, he meets the snarky burlesque performer "Sugarpuss" O'Shea (Barbara Stanwyck). Fascinated by her command of popular jargon, Potts invites her to stay with him. But, unknown to Potts, she is the fiancée of a mobster (Dana Andrews) and is wanted by the police. In the ensuing mayhem, Potts must stay on his toes or be swallowed up by bigger fish.
