OAKLAND, CA — A shocking act of vandalism unfolded Tuesday night, Dec. 12, 2023, as a towering public Hanukkah Menorah on Lake Merritt in Oakland was deliberately destroyed. Law enforcement is currently investigating the incident as a hate crime, highlighting a distressing surge in antisemitic activities within the Bay Area, particularly in Oakland.

The destruction of the menorah adds to an alarming pattern of antisemitism in the region. In November, an Oakland City Council meeting became a platform for hours of public comments accusing Israel of crimes on October 7. Moreover, a teach-in held in Oakland on December 6 featured public school teachers disseminating anti-Israel propaganda, prompting concerns among some Jewish families about the safety of their children in the district.

The once-prominent menorah, now unrecognizable, has fallen victim to antisemitic graffiti, with its dismantled pieces scattered in the vicinity. Tyler Gregory, CEO of the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) of the Bay Area, and Rabbi Mark Bloom, head rabbi at Temple Beth Abraham, are available to discuss the escalating antisemitism in the Bay Area and the heightened anxiety within the Jewish community.

Tyler Gregory released a statement condemning the desecration:

"The malicious destruction of a public menorah in Lake Merritt, Oakland, accompanied by hateful graffiti, is just the latest example of rampant antisemitism tearing apart the Bay Area. This is devastating to the local Jewish community, which lights Hanukkah menorahs as a public celebration of this holiday commemorating Jewish survival. There's no room for debate; this vicious act unequivocally deserves condemnation. Jews in this country should not have to live in fear."
