DLNews Politics:
Donald Trump (76) has two new powerful helpers in the race for his third presidential candidacy. Their names are as world-famous as his: Mickey Mouse and Scrooge McDuck….
For about two years, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (44), who is his most formidable opponent in the fight for the Republican Party crown, has been fighting with the entertainment giant Disney. And the winner, according to polls, is the ex-president with the famous mop of hair.
Trump caught up a deficit of 14 percent (December) and is now a whopping 13 points ahead. A plus of 27 points!
The trouble with the mouse started in the summer of 2021 – amid the pandemic. DeSantis, who was against the strict corona measures and had left Florida open like Trump, was angry with Disney. Reason: Contrary to its instructions, the company had forced the employees in its amusement parks to be vaccinated.
DeSantis then threatened Disney with fines.
The group (sales in 2022: 65 billion, 220,000 employees worldwide) was not impressed and let the new Republican shooting star down again in March 2022. This time it was about DeSanti's LGBTQ policy.
Like his political ex-foster Trump, the governor, who belongs to the right wing of the Republicans, pushed through a law that forbids speaking about homosexuality and Ghent identification in kindergartens, elementary and middle schools. The law is known as "Don't say gay."
Disney's then-board member Bob Chapek wrote in a memo to his LGBTQ employees that the company in Florida would no longer donate money to politicians. He also urged courts to overturn DeSanti's law.
The governor was furious and threatened to remove an old privilege from Disney. Because company founder Walt Disney bought up around 110 square kilometers of swamp and pasture land for $400 million in the 1960s and promised to create thousands of jobs in Florida, his country was declared a self-governing tax district.
Desperate for revenge, DeSantis has now pushed through that the district will be subordinate to him. But at the end of March, it came out: Disney had ensured behind the scenes that it would retain its tax privileges for another 30 years. Florida's governor was disgraced.
Trump senses his chance.
Donald Trump immediately sensed his chance. After becoming the first US president in history to be indicted by a criminal court in New York in March (for paying hush money to porn star Stormy Daniels), he had already made up ground in a duel with DeSantis. So now he beat the governor.
DeSantis loves to get his fingers in things — and I'm not just talking about the pudding," his campaign sneered. Or he gave it one of his famous nicknames and posted on his social network: "Disney destroyed DeSantis. Next, Disney will announce they no longer invest in Florida because of the governor..."
Trump also convinced several Republican members of Congress behind the scenes to officially support him in the fight for the presidential candidacy.
