DLNews Crime:
When Nicole Brass talks about her date, horror still resonates in every word...
The former prostitute met Rex Heuermann (59) in 2015. What she didn't know then: Heuermann is a serial killer - and she is precisely the kind of woman he was after.
Because the so-said architect from Massapequa (US state of New York) is said to have murdered at least four women between 2007 and 2010 and buried their bodies on Gilgo Beach, all his victims were drug-addicted prostitutes.
Nicole Brass also offered her body on the internet for the next high. Heuermann arranged to meet her for dinner at a fish restaurant in Port Jefferson via a sex platform.
The conversation babbled on at first. Heuermann told about his job as an architect in New York City before he is said to have asked her if she was interested in true crime stories. "Then he said, 'Have you heard about the Gilgo Beach murders?' Then he started getting weird," Brass told the New York Daily News.
Brass had been following the case closely. Still, Heuermann seemed to know more: "He mentioned one of the girls I haven't heard from before. It seemed he was speaking from experience and not just having an opinion."
The serial killer seemed to enjoy talking about the murders of the four prostitutes. "His body language and his eyes changed. He seemed to enjoy talking about the victims," Brass recalls.
Brass: "When he talked about the murders, it was almost as if he were imagining them in his head and getting aroused by his words. He seemed like someone who wants to brag about what he's doing but can't."
At the latest, Nicole Brass realized she had to leave quickly. But the serial killer had other plans. Heuermann, therefore, wanted to guide Brass to the hotel room he had booked for both of them. She should have left her car in front of the restaurant.
For Nicole Brass, that was the point at which she just left: "Looking back, he probably didn't feel like killing someone and then getting rid of their car," she believes.
Maureen Brainard-Barnes († 25), Melissa Barthelemy († 24), Megan Waterman († 22), and Amber Lynn Costello († 27) were less fortunate. Their bodies were found in burlap sacks on Gilgo Beach in 2010.
Today, Nicole Brass no longer works as a prostitute. Nevertheless, she never went to the police: "I am a criminal and didn't want anything to do with the police."
She suspects that Rex Heuermann was also targeting her for this reason: "I think he was chasing girls who were drug addicts or had a criminal record, actually anyone who wouldn't talk to the police."
Facts:
In 2010, police found the bodies of four prostitutes on Gilgo Beach. Heuermann is accused of killing three of them. In Maureen Brainard-Barnes' Er case, he is the prime suspect.
In 2010 and 2011, eight bodies were found on a stretch of beach on the island, just a few hundred meters apart. The serial killer is said to have dismembered some bodies.
Among the victims: four prostitutes. Heuermann has already been charged with the murder of three of them. In the fourth case - the murder of Maureen Brainard-Barnes - he is listed as the prime suspect.
Rex Heuermann has no chance of being released on bail. His wife has filed for divorce.
Now businessman Heuermann is behind bars. The ultimate piece of evidence: a pizza crust!
How Heuermann finally blew up? A witness observed a pickup truck that investigators linked to Heuermann.
When Heuermann disposed of a box of pizza leftovers in a Manhattan garbage can in March, police officers reached into the bucket and compared its DNA to a hair found on the ankle of one of the victims. Direct hit!
