DLNews Breaking News:
Earthquake election in the USA - US Republicans in the House of Representatives have ousted their leader after an internal power struggle.
On Tuesday evening, the MPs voted for a “motion to vacate” against Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy (58). The background to this was his decision, despite warnings from a group of around two dozen hardliners, to resort to the help of the Democrats to prevent the shutdown through interim financing.
After the political debacle, Kevin McCarthy left the hall.
The shutdown would have meant a shutdown of the federal administration: millions of soldiers and civil servants would no longer have received any money, and aid funds would also have been canceled.
Kevin McCarthy's deselection process is unique in almost 250 years of US history. The chairman of the House of Representatives comes third in the US ranking after the president and vice president.
The mastermind of the disempowerment is Matt Gaetz. He introduced the motion for McCarthy's removal to the House of Representatives on Monday evening. The Democrats in the chamber, in turn, decided not to come to McCarthy's aid and also voted against him.
Matt Gaetz is considered the mastermind of the disempowerment.
For the 58-year-old, the deselection is a political debacle. McCarthy was in office for just nine months. As recently as the weekend, the Republican declared - as in Gloria Gaynor's famous disco hit - "I will survive."
The person who was shot has now spoken out. Kevin McCarthy said he would not run again for President of the Chamber of Congress. He “loved every minute” of his job. And: “I wouldn’t do anything differently. If I lose my job because I do what I believe is right, I can live with that very well.” After all, he made history.
The search for a new chairman will likely bring work in the House of Representatives to a standstill. This also affects the complex and time-critical negotiations with the Senate about a final budget.
