According to the political scientist, the upcoming conflict over Crimea is significant. Since 2014, Russia has held control of the peninsula, considered a major victory for Vladimir Putin's (age 70) foreign policy efforts.

According to Fukuyama, the recapture of Crimea by Ukraine would significantly impact Putin, potentially resulting in his downfall. Specifically, losing control of Crimea would especially blow the Kremlin dictator's survival.

"If they have to cede Crimea, it's hard to imagine Putin surviving given how much they invested in retaking Crimea," Fukuyama said. Because of Crimea, the Russians "are in a tough situation."

Speaking to RadioFreeEurope, Fukuyama said Crimea is highly vulnerable. Because: "If the Ukrainians manage to liberate the Kherson Oblast, they have cut off the Crimea."

"There is a railway line that goes from Russia to Crimea, and there is a bridge across the strait," Fukuyama said. So the Ukrainians would be able to "really cut off both traffic arteries."

A political scientist suggests that Ukraine could achieve an advantageous position without resorting to taking control of Crimea. Instead of invading, they could capture all Russian forces stationed in Crimea and hold them hostage. This approach could prove highly beneficial for Ukraine.

There have been frequent and significant explosions and fires occurring in Crimea for several weeks, leading to suspicion that Ukraine may be planning a liberation offensive in the region. This is significant because Crimea is a crucial part of Russia's invasion strategy, with Sevastopol serving as the home port for the Black Sea Fleet and various other military facilities.

A significant part of the supplies of the Russian armed forces in Ukraine is also routed via Crimea, above all via the Crimea Bridge, which was built in 2018 and connected Russia with the annexed peninsula. On October 8, part of the bridge was destroyed by a massive explosion; Russia's dictator Vladimir Putin spoke of "terrorism" and accused the Ukrainian secret service. Yet, just one month later, the Ukrainian army was able to liberate large parts of occupied southern Ukraine, including the regional capital of Cherson.
