In the early evening, numerous police vehicles and ambulances were dispatched to the affected neighborhood, and a large-scale manhunt was launched to search for the perpetrator. However, the background of the crime initially remained unclear.
The shooter had barricaded himself in the shed of a residential building and was arrested three hours later. It was a male, white youth, confirmed the police. Their exact age and identity were not specified.
Hedingham is described as a sprawling, tree-covered neighborhood full of single-family homes and townhomes that are more affordable than other parts of the region around Raleigh.
A witness told news station WRAL News that he saw the shooter running through his backyard after the shooting. "He had a shotgun with a long barrel. He was dressed in camouflage clothing. He had a full backpack on that also had a camouflage pattern," he reported.
"This is a sad and tragic day for the city of Raleigh," Raleigh Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin said at a news conference later that evening. "We need to do more. We need to stop this senseless violence in America. We need to address gun violence," Baldwin continued.
The shooting in Raleigh is the third in a week of violence in the United States. On Sunday, five people were killed in a shooting at home in South Carolina. On Wednesday night, two police officers were shot in Connecticut after being ambushed by a 911 call about possible domestic violence.
