The moment he said: I am Britney Spears now!
In her biography “The Woman in Me” (published on October 24th), Britney Spears (41) writes EVERYTHING off her chest. She doesn’t leave anything out, even writing how, when she was 19, she secretly aborted Justin Timberlake’s (42) child in her bathroom at his request. And, of course, her father’s 13 years of guardianship, Jamie Spears (71) is dissected.
Jamie Spears held guardianship over Britney for 13 years. From 2008 to 2021, her father was in charge of her career.
It’s about surveillance! Bans! Control!
Jamie Spears held guardianship of Britney for 13 years. From February 2008 to November 2021, her father was responsible for her career and personal life.
Ambivalent relationship: Britney felt exploited and abandoned by her parents. Nevertheless, she always sought contact, especially with her mother, Lynne.
Britney writes in her memoir: “The guardianship was ordered because I was supposedly no longer able to manage my affairs - to feed myself, to decide how to spend my money, to fulfill my duties as a mother, just everything. So why did they let me do an episode of How I Met Your Mother a few weeks later and send me on a grueling world tour?”
Britney Spears appeared in the US show “Good Morning America” in New York 2008. Ten months later, her father became her legal guardian and assumed responsibility for all aspects of her life.
Her father saw guardianship for her “as a great stepping stone on the way to my comeback.” For Britney, it didn’t add up: “Even though I had released the best album of my career just a few months before.”
With her album “Blackout” in 2007, Britney built on her old successes and won several “MTV Music Awards.”
Her dad, Jamie Spears, set up a workspace in Britney’s house. The singer writes: “My father took over my small study and bar area and made it his office.” Then he explained to her: “‘Let me clarify one thing,’ he said. ‘From now on, I’m in charge here. Sit in that chair, and I’ll tell you how things work.’ And then he said, ‘From now on, I’m Britney Spears’.”
What followed was an endless series of bans for Britney. According to the pop singer, her father controlled “every little aspect” of her everyday life. Meeting friends or going to parties became impossible.
Britney: “On the rare occasions I went out, security guards would search the host’s house beforehand to make sure he didn’t have any alcohol or drugs in there, not even ibuprofen. No one at the party was allowed to drink while I was there.” “If a man wanted to date me, the security guards my father hired checked his private background; he had to have one Sign a confidentiality agreement and even take a blood test.” And that’s not all!
2007 was a scandalous year for Britney: she visited an addiction clinic and lost custody of her two sons.
During her time in Las Vegas (“Piece of Me” show from 2013 to 2017), her father became even stricter towards her. “I wasn’t allowed to drive. Everyone who came to my trailer had to sign a waiver. Everything was very secure – so much so that I could hardly breathe.”
From 2013 to 2017, Britney rocked her “Piece of Me” show at the “Hotel Planet Hollywood” in Las Vegas. Including merchandising, she earned up to $475,000 from one appearance!
Jamie Spears is also said to have constantly criticized her body. “And no matter how disciplined I was about dieting and exercising, my father constantly accused me of being too fat. He put me on an even stricter diet.” She kept asking her butler for something decent to eat. Without success. “So I lived almost exclusively on chicken and canned vegetables for two years.”
Britney also needed access to her own money. “I received an allowance of $2,000 a week.”
Megastar Britney: She filled the biggest concert halls and earned millions. But her father took care of her “pocket money,” giving his daughter $2,000 weekly.
It reached the point where she couldn’t even invite her dancers to dinner: “On one of the few evenings that I went to dinner with a friend and a few others, including my dancers, I wanted the bill for them to take over the whole group. The bill was about a thousand dollars because the group was large, but I wanted to invite them.” But their card payment was declined. “There wasn’t enough money in my pocket money account to pay the bill.”
Meanwhile, her father is said to have received $16,000 a month just for guardianship.
