US President Joe Biden (81) was in a good mood at the correspondents' dinner, took aim at competitor Donald Trump (77) and didn't take himself too seriously.
DLNews Politics Entertainment:
At the star-studded 2024 Correspondents' Dinner, the usual political sparring took a backseat as both President Joe Biden and comedian Colin Jost turned the event into a comedy roast, much to the delight of the nearly 3,000 attendees at the luxurious Hilton Hotel in Washington, DC.
Jost became known in the USA through the cult show “Saturday Night Live.” He provided the joke of the evening.
The night was filled with laughter as President Biden, often dubbed "Sleepy Joe," rebranded himself as "Joe Cool" for the evening. He didn't hold back, especially regarding his predecessor, Donald Trump. With a smirk, Biden quipped, "I’m a grown man running against a six-year-old," drawing a wave of laughter from the crowd, which included celebrities and politicians alike.
The night’s comedic host, Colin Jost, wasn't far behind with his zingers. Referring to Trump's recent appearances in court, Jost joked, "It’s past 10 p.m. and ‘Sleepy Joe’ is wide awake, which is more than I can say for Donald Trump, who finds courtroom benches perfect for his naptime." This jab referred to Trump's habit of dozing off during his ongoing legal troubles in the hush money trial in New York.
One of the stars in the audience is Scarlett Johansson (39, “Avengers”). The Hollywood star is married to comedian Colin Jost.
President Biden continued the theme, not missing a chance to link Trump's current legal woes with a clever play on words: "Donald has had a few tough days. You could say he's been experiencing some stormy weather," he said, eliciting a mix of groans and chuckles from the audience. This was a nod to Stormy Daniels, the adult film actress linked to Trump by a legal scandal.
The laughter reached its peak when Jost delivered the line of the night, poking fun at the age of the candidates: "I'm not saying either candidate is old, but even Jimmy Carter’s thinking he might have a shot in this race." The reference to the 99-year-old former President Carter capped off a night where humor bridged the gap between political rivals and celebrated a lighthearted reprieve from the usual tensions of Washington.
The event was a display of jokes and a showcase of how humor can disarm the most tense political atmosphere. It was a night to remember for those in attendance and a reminder of the power of laughter in navigating the complexities of political discourse.
