When you hear "Monkeypox," you probably think of a tropical island. Unfortunately, that isn't so because Monkeypox can be found in our area. This virus is highly infectious, but it can be prevented by vaccination. However, the vaccine against Monkeypox is minimal, so you must get it as early as possible.
Riverside County Public Health reported a case of probable Monkeypox on June 22. Eisenhower Health confirmed the case two days later. The patient is under 60 years old and was seen in an outpatient clinic. The disease has been confirmed as orthopoxvirus on tissue samples collected from the patient.
Symptoms of Monkeypox include fever, sores, and general body aches. Symptoms can be difficult to distinguish, as Monkeypox can mimic other diseases, such as syphilis or acne. Sores will develop in several stages before they heal completely. Monkeypox sores may appear on the genital area, hands, chest, and more. The disease can spread throughout the body, so it's important to know what to expect if you're infected.
While Monkeypox isn't new, it still can spread through the air, so if you're in the area, don't hesitate to get medical attention. If you notice lesions, you should avoid social activities or visit a doctor for a diagnosis. In case of severe disease, you should call a physician or go to an urgent care center as soon as possible.
There are many misconceptions surrounding the spread of Monkeypox, but one of them is that most cases of this disease affect same-sex partners. Unfortunately, there is no clear answer to this question, so experts are still unsure how the virus spreads.
The CDC has issued a recent update regarding the spread of Monkeypox. This update highlights that males are most at risk and that gay men should limit the number of sexual partners they have. 99% of all cases of Monkeypox involve men who have intercourse with another male. Because this disease is spread primarily through sex, the WHO says it is vital to engage communities of homosexual men and gay men to help curb the spread of the virus.
Even though it is more common among homosexuals, the incidence of this disease is still extremely low. Even though it affects people with sex histories of different sexes, it is not limited to homosexuals. It can even infect women. The best way to prevent an outbreak of Monkeypox is to avoid sexual intercourse. Those with HIV have been more likely to contract it than others.
