DLNews Crime:
At 6:14 p.m. local time Wednesday, the heart of Darryl Barwick, 56, beat one last time.
Darryl was executed in the Florida State Prison for a Peeping Tom murder in 1986. A few hours before the lethal injection, Barwick, who, according to prison officials, was in good spirits, treated himself to a sumptuous last meal.
This consisted of fried chicken, mac and cheese, beans with rice, cornbread, ice cream, and lemonade. The Florida Department of Justice announced this.
No relatives present
Later, the 56-year-old walked from death row to the execution room. None of his family members were present for the killing. The killer's last words were to the relatives of Rebecca Wendt (†24), who were also absent. Darryl Barwick said, "I can't explain why I did it. It's time for me to apologize to the family."
The murder had occurred in the victim's Panama City apartment. Barwick confessed to having observed the young woman sunbathing in front of their apartment complex. The Peeping Tom then followed her into her room - allegedly only to rob her.
Peeping Tom Stabbed 37 Times
Rebecca Wendt allegedly resisted, and Darryl Barwick stabbed the woman 37 times with a knife. The nurse's body was found wrapped in a blanket. On the bed - not on the body - officers discovered traces of semen.
The arrest of the then 19-year-old - already on record for raping a 21-year-old with a knife blade - followed shortly after. Because of a procedural error, the first verdict against the American was overturned. The final guilty verdict followed in 1992: death by injection.
Thirty-one years later, the poison mix was directed into Barwick's left arm, and the killer's heart stopped beating.
