Russell Crowe is trading his Roman armor for something far darker. The Oscar-winning “Gladiator” star has taken on what may be the most chilling role of his career—Nazi war criminal Hermann Göring—in the upcoming Hollywood drama Nuremberg.
Impressive transformation: Russell Crowe (61) as Nazi criminal Hermann Göring
Set for release this November, Nuremberg coincides with the 80th anniversary of the landmark post-World War II trials that reshaped international justice. Directed by James Vanderbilt, known for Zodiac and Truth, the film dives into the psychological clash between Göring and the man tasked with decoding his mind—U.S. Army psychiatrist Douglas Kelley, portrayed by fellow Oscar-winner Rami Malek. The screenplay is based on Jack El-Hai’s 2013 book The Nazi and the Psychiatrist, a haunting true story of intellect, ideology, and insanity.
At the heart of the film is Göring himself—a WWI flying ace turned Nazi heavyweight, Luftwaffe chief, and Hitler’s right-hand man. In the crumbling ruins of the Third Reich, he became the highest-ranking Nazi held for trial. Kelley, just 34 at the time, spent months interviewing him, peeling back the layers of delusion and fanaticism. Ultimately, Göring would cheat the hangman’s noose by swallowing a hidden cyanide capsule in 1946, just hours before his scheduled execution.

Filming took place in Prague and at historic sites in Nuremberg, offering a gritty authenticity to the film’s backdrop. German actor Andreas Pietschmann, known for Netflix’s Dark, joins the ensemble in a supporting role. Produced by Sony Pictures Classics, Nuremberg promises to be both a psychological thriller and a timely reminder of history’s darkest courtroom.
Brace yourself—this fall, Russell Crowe takes the stand as a man who defied justice with chilling charisma.
