DLnews Breaking News:
This is the sad result of a shooting rampage in Allen (Texas). The so-far unknown shooter had violently fired gunshots on Saturday on the premises of the busy shopping mall "Premium Outlets."
A heavily armed police officer secured the scene; the shooter had been "neutralized" by then.
A police officer who was in the shopping mall on another business heard the shots around 3:30 p.m. local time (10:30 p.m. CEST) and "neutralized" the attacker. He then notified the emergency services.
The rescuers found carnage at the scene. According to the CNN channel, some of the victims were said to be as young as five years old. Six people died still at the mall; two succumbed to their severe injuries in the hospital. Three of the seven others hospitalized are in critical condition.
In the meantime, authorities had assumed a possible second shooter.
Video footage of the killing was reported by the New York Post. Images reportedly show the shooter, dressed in black, getting out of a silver-colored car and opening fire. However, the dashcam clip lasts only 30 seconds.
Videos on social media reportedly show the slain gunman in a pool of blood. Next to him, the suspected murder weapon: an assault rifle.
People are evacuated from the shopping mall.
Jaynal Pervez, a father who rushed from the mall after his daughter called for help, told CNN, "Nowhere is safe anymore. I don't know what to do." Pervez later told the CBS station that chaotic scenes had occurred in the parking lot. "Shoes were lying around, people's cell phones were lying in the street."
Survivors are being protected - briefly, authorities assumed a possible second perpetrator was involved.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott called the gun attack an "unspeakable tragedy" - but sadly commonplace in the gun-crazy country. According to the Gun Violence Archive website, there have already been more than 195 gun attacks this year in which four or more people were injured or killed.
People signal during the evacuation that they are unarmed.
In 2021, about 49,000 people died from using firearms in the United States, with more guns than residents (332 million), up from 45,000 in 2020.
