Apple's decision to release their 14-inch M3 MacBook Pro models with only 8GB of RAM may have disappointed some users despite impressive benchmarks. Even increasing memory costs an additional $250, which seems quite steep for such an entry-level model. However, according to Bob Borchers, vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing at Apple, macOS uses memory efficiently, meaning 8GB should suffice in most situations.
Vadim Yuryev of Dame Tech doesn't subscribe to that viewpoint. He is among a select few Tech YouTubers that consistently grow year after year and believes 8GB is too little RAM for a MacBook Pro designed for professional usage.
To prove his point, Yuryev conducted several real-life tests on two 14-inch M3 MacBook Pro models- one equipped with 8GB RAM and another upgraded with 16GB of unified memory. His results were truly astonishing.
He began by running Lightroom Classic benchmarks to gauge how his machines would fare, exporting 50 42-megapixel images and noting the 8GB model took nearly one minute, while 16GB did it almost instantly. When running multiple browser tabs concurrently, he observed how the performance of 8GB models degraded while the 16GB models kept pace despite opening 20 accounts simultaneously on each machine.
Yuryev conducted further tests to see how two MacBook Pros handled web apps like Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge to assess the effect of multitasking on performance. Both laptops could easily handle five or more web applications open at once without experiencing any difficulties; however, performance on the 8GB model became noticeably compromised upon opening more than several tabs; in this instance, it almost rendered itself unusable for simple tasks.
Yuryev used the SSD speeds of both laptops to prove his case, finding that the 8GB MacBook Pro's SSD was considerably slower than its 16GB counterpart - possibly due to multiple applications running simultaneously, filling the memory on its chip and making access more difficult.
Apple's tightly integrated chips and lightning-fast SSD storage make its computers much less limited than Windows PCs with comparable raw specs. However, that shouldn't be used to justify selling laptops with only 8GB of memory in 2023. Most people who want a MacBook Pro will require more memory; those wanting one should consider upgrading to one featuring 16GB of unified RAM instead. It is disappointing that there isn't a suitable alternative option from Apple at this price range.
