Texas - A Land Rover drove into a group of people waiting at a bus stop outside a shelter for immigrants and homeless people in Brownsville, Texas, on Sunday. Police said seven people died in the rampage, and at least 11 were injured.
The alleged perpetrator was arrested at the scene of the accident
Martin Sandoval, an investigator with the Brownsville Police Department, said the accident occurred around 8:30 a.m. Sunday at a bus stop near the Ozanam Center, a shelter for immigrants in the border city. He added that the background still needs to be clarified.
According to the director of the Ozanam Center, Victor Maldonado, most victims were Venezuelan men. Shortly after the terrible accident, Maldonado watched the images from the surveillance cameras:
"What we see in the video is that this SUV, a Range Rover, just ran the traffic light about 30 meters away and sped through the people sitting there at the bus stop."
A man was arrested at the scene and is now in custody; police told reporters. He is also being treated in a hospital and tested for alcohol and drugs.
Sunday's incident came just hours after Texas had already been overshadowed by another tragedy: a shooting at an outlet mall in Dallas that killed eight people shortly before.
