The 34th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival kicked off this week, celebrating the best in filmmaking and performers worldwide. This year’s Festival features the most diverse group of films ever screened at the Festival. From documentaries to buzzed-about films, the Palm Springs International Film Festival is sure to please.

A star-studded black-tie awards gala kicks off the Festival. Attendees at the event include Academy Award(r) winners Jane Fonda, Rita Moreno, Michelle Williams, Seth Rogen, Danielle Deadwyler, and Lily Tomlin. In addition, there were touching speeches, gorgeous gowns, and goofy interactions.

“80 for Brady,” directed by Kyle Marvin, has a global premiere at the Festival. It tells the story of four friends who travel to the 2017 Super Bowl to see seven-time Super Bowl champion, Tom Brady. Instead, they encounter a rift that carries themes of loneliness and separation. In addition to the world premiere, the film will receive the Variety Creative Impact Award. This special honor is given to directors and actors who have significantly impacted the film industry.

Another notable film in attendance was the documentary “Shot in the Arm.” The film follows the anti-vax movement and is executive produced by Neil deGrasse Tyson. Other guests at the event included Jamie Lee Curtis, Andrew Garfield, Paul Dano, Jud Hirsch, and Gabriel LaBelle.

Several notable Irish stars were in attendance at the event, including Colin Farrell. He was presented with the Desert Palm Achievement Award for his work in “The Banshees of Inisherin” and “The Banshees of Tar.” Also, at the awards ceremony, “Tar” star Cate Blanchett accepted the Desert Palm Achievement Award for her performance in the film. She said she hoped to make another film with Viola Davis and would work with her again.

Also honored were Paul Dano, who received the Spotlight Award, and the cast of the Fablemans. Director Steven Spielberg was also honored with the Vanguard Award.

The Palm Springs International Film Festival will screen 27 new film premieres. For those who do not want to attend the Festival, the Festival will host several "Opening Night" presentations. A panel of filmmakers and film critics will select these films. The Festival will also screen the new international film, "The Lost King," directed by Stephen Frears. Sally Hawkins, Sally Field, and Tom Brady are expected to attend the premiere.
Last but certainly not least, the Festival will end with the "Best of Fest" awards presentation. These honorees will be announced at the awards ceremony. As an added bonus, the Festival will also be screening "New Voices New Visions."
Those looking to attend the Festival are advised to apply for a badge. A badge will grant access to all of the film screenings for a small fee. Students and college-aged students can get a badge for only $100.
