DLNews Entertainment:
Since 1927, TIME magazine has honored one individual who most impacted the news over the last year with their annual Person of the Year selection. This year, they chose pop music icon Taylor Swift, who combined cultural and financial success. She earned three distinct global covers of TIME and an insightful interview that revealed her talents, such as using calculated approaches in her work.
Swift has found an effective solution in an age of hyper-saturation and trolling; her use of narrative drives conversation from Grammy-winning albums like Reputation to blockbuster concert films like Fifty Shades Freed; she's become one of the highest earners ever with music sales, endorsement deals, real estate investments, and personal properties as well as earning power through owning houses and businesses.
TIME Magazine made history this year when they selected Swift as its Person of the Year, but their editorial team found this decision simple. According to TIME, Swift "has proven that she can transcend borders and be a source of light," her ability to reach millions within minutes is genuinely extraordinary.
TIME editors ultimately chose Swift from among a host of candidates, including Hollywood strikers, Xi Jinping, Trump prosecutors, Barbie, Sam Altman, and OpenAI CEO Jie Cheng to represent eight billion people around the globe on Wednesday's Today show on NBC. Editor-in-Chief Sam Jacobs explained their decision on Today by choosing someone "that can bring joy." Jacobs shared this news via an appearance on NBC's Today show and commented as such on it:
Swift has long been an advocate for women in entertainment. She inspired a movement to register voters, testified at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing regarding Ticketmaster practices, and helped change pop culture with her blockbuster concert film and Eras Tour. At 33 years old, the singer makes waves in sports as she cheers for Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce during games, even attending one of his games herself!
Swift opens up about her upbringing watching sports and the influence her relationship with Kelce has had on her musical career, as well as training her body for Eras Tour shows, some of which saw stadium seats be packed to capacity and caused Ticketmaster's servers to crash.
Swift has found an effective way to unite people despite our divided world, where many institutions are crumbling, from her fan base to media members who follow her every move. No other celebrity can move so many people with such power and grace - which is why TIME named her their 2023 Person of the Year.
