Louis Bernard Gaskin (56) was executed by lethal injection in Florida on Wednesday.
On December 20, 1989, he murdered the couple Robert (56) and Georgette Sturmfels (55) during a robbery. Because he wore black ninja clothing during his crimes and was called the "Ninja Killer." Investigators said he shot his victims in their homes with a .22 caliber pistol. The items he stole from the Sturmfels' home on Florida's northeast coast - a clock, two lamps, and a VCR - were found in his home and were intended as Christmas gifts for his girlfriend. He was also convicted of armed robbery, burglary, and attempted murder of another nearby couple.
Local media reported that Gaskin quickly confessed to the crimes and told a psychologist before his trial that he knew what he was doing.
"The guilt was always there," Gaskin said after the sentencing. "The devil had more of a grip on me than God. I knew I was in the wrong. I was not insane."
The execution: Gaskin woke up at 4:45 a.m. local time Wednesday and had his last meal at 9:45 a.m., said Department of Corrections spokeswoman Kayla McLaughlin Smith. The dinner included BBQ ribs, pork and turkey necks, buffalo wings, shrimp fried rice, French fries, and water.
In his final words, he said, "Justice is not about the crime. It's not about the criminal. It's about the law."
