The killer with his gun: A surveillance camera captured this image of the Lewiston murderer Robert Card.
DLNews Shooting Update:
A sigh of relief in Lewiston (US state of Maine): The army reservist who murdered 18 people is dead. He died from a shot in the head; he took his own life. CNN reports this.
The man was found dead in the woods in Lisbon, near a recycling center eight miles from Lewiston. The police had already lifted a curfew since the crime on Wednesday on Friday afternoon.
Heavily armed Robert Card (40) carried out the worst massacre in the USA so far this year. He attacked visitors to a bowling alley and a restaurant. Using an assault rifle with a telescopic sight, he killed in a calculated and systematic manner, survivors say.
After the rampage, the murderer went into hiding. Four hundred police officers were looking for him. At a press conference, Maine's security chief, Mike Sauschuck, explained new search areas with display boards, reported around 530 tips, and presented general challenges in police searches.
A nightmare for the residents of the city of 37,000! They were not allowed to leave the house for 48 hours and had to fear for their lives in the “lockdown” as long as the killer was running around freely. The city couldn't even mourn the victims.
First, a resident in the neighboring town of Lisbon heard a loud bang, thought it was a gunshot, and called 911. Police officers with assault rifles then searched a greenhouse. But again, none! Police cars with flashing lights raced along the main street – once in one direction, then another. There were also no clear search patterns discernible in the flight paths of the helicopters.
Meanwhile, police divers searched the bottom of the Androscoggin River, at the boat launch site where Card's getaway car (a white Subaru) was found on the day of the massacre. The chief investigators did not want to rule out the possibility that Card could have taken his own life. According to CNN, a letter was found in his home stating that he believed he was "no longer alive" at the time the letter was found.
Other theories circulated: Card, who owns a Sea-Doo jet ski and a five-meter-long boat, may have escaped via waterways. A pistol was also found in the getaway car. A cell phone was seized, which the violent perpetrator had used to distract the investigators, according to speculation.
Meanwhile, ALL 18 victims of the bloodbath have now been identified. The local newspaper “Portland Press Herald” listed them. Names as silent accusations. Among the victims: a bar manager, a sign language translator, a postman, a father of five, a car mechanic. And so many more.
The oldest victim, Robert E. Violette, was 76. The youngest was 14: Aaron Young, a top-graded star student, visited the bowling alley with his dad, William Young (44). He also died in a hail of bullets.
According to initial examinations of his online activities, the killer, who has a mental illness, had followed wild conspiracy theories about US President Joe Biden (80). He was a ticking time bomb.
