Biden doubleheader Covid-19 battle By Desert Star Staff Vice President Joe Biden is facing a fresh uphill battle with his Covid-19 infection. Biden has tested positive for the virus in the past and had a negative test just a week ago. But today, even after taking the antiviral medication Paxlovida a new positive test result puts the president at a high risk of getting seriously ill. While undergoing a treatment plan, the 79-year-old will remain in isolation in the White House for the remainder of the day. Dr. O’Connor said he anticipates a positive result. Biden’s press secretary Jen Psaki said the White House had been prepared to handle

this situation for months. President Biden wrote on Twitter today: “Folks, today I tested positive for COVID again. This happens with a small minority of folks. I’ve got no symptoms, but I am going to isolate for the safety of everyone around me. I’m still at work and will be back on the road soon.” Highly contagious, the infection has been creeping into the inner circle of Biden. His family and advisers, including chief medical adviser Anthony S. Fauci, have been infected. President Biden’s top medical adviser recently revealed he is experiencing a rebound of his Covid-19 infection after taking the antiviral medication Paxlovid. The United States Centers for Disease Control

C and Prevention released physicians a health and wellness alert on May 24. Advising that Covid-19 symptoms sometimes come

back might be how the infection plays out in some individuals, whether they’re immunized or treated with drugs like Paxlovid. However,

the CDC said many rebound situations involve mild illness, and no reports of significant illness have been reported.

House passes assault-style weapons restriction

By Desert Star Staff The House of Representatives voted Friday evening to ban assault-style weapons, sending the bill to the Senate, where it’s not anticipated to advance. The final vote was 217-213. Democrats Henry Cuellar of Texas, Jared Golden of Maine, Ron Kind Of Wisconsin, Vicente Gonzalez of Texas, and Kurt Schrader of Oregon did not support the ban. Republicans Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania and Chris Jacobs of New York elected pro the bill. “Today, our Democratic Majority will use up and pass the Assault Weapons Restriction legislation: a crucial step in our ongoing fight against the lethal epidemic of weapon violence in our nation,” Pelosi stated in a letter to members of her caucus ahead of the vote. The attempt to integrate both pieces of legislation came together late Thursday night. It was worked out between Pelosi, Congressional Black Caucus Chairwoman Joyce Beatty of Ohio, and moderate Democratic Rep. Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey. Your House is slated to depart Washington for a

month-long recess beginning Friday night. However, Pelosi could call lawmakers back into town before September for particular circumstances, something she would likely do if Senate Democrats passed a separate bill on climate change and prescription drug pricing in the coming weeks.

Earlier this year, Congress passed a bipartisan bill to address weapon violence that totaled up to the very first significant federal gun safety legislation in years. The legislation included countless dollars for mental health, school safety, crisis intervention programs, and state rewards to consist

of juvenile records in the National Instant Lawbreaker Background Examine System. It likewise made substantial modifications to the procedure when somebody ages 18 to 21 buys a gun and closes the so-called boyfriend loophole, a victory for Democrats, who have long fought for that.

HOROSCOPES ARIES

You may struggle mentally to maintain equilibrium between hopes, wishes, dreams, desires and what is actually possible. It’s good to study the subject of sacrifice - the 1st Law of the Soul. Note sacrifice and sacred begin with the same four letters. At the center of sacrifice is Love. Love and sacrifice both come from the heart. We’re on Earth because we sacrificed ourselves (chose) to be here. You are to be a fiery warrior. Spiritual warriors always win.

TAURUS You assess all relationships in terms of value, practical as well as spiritual values. You must also assess what you value, yourself as of value and the values you offer others. Often you sense there is more you can give. Always begin any actions with intentions for Goodwill. This intention creates Right Relations. Always offer the goodness of yourself in relationships. You know love isn’t a feeling. It’s a daily choice.

GEMINI Tend to all things great, small and necessary in daily life. Observe all habits, agendas, actions and notice how you serve others and your environments. We evolve stepby-step, beginning with tending to our physical, then emotional, then mental bodies. Then we progress to the Soul. Each day “brood, as a Soul, upon the service for the coming day.” Emotions are then calmed.

Hunger Advocates Celebrate Progress; Vow to Continue Fight By Desert Star Staff California’s new budget expands CalFresh benefits to low-income undocumented people age 55 and older, and now advocates are looking to build on their progress. The Food4All initiative wants to remove restrictions on age and immigration status. Asm. Miguel Santiago, D-Boyle Heights, praised the governor and Legislature for the expansion but said it is unacceptable that some families still go hungry in California, the fifth-largest economy in the world. “We were able to get 55 and above who aren’t documented into the

CalFresh program,” Santiago noted. “That’s just one step of a long journey of a longer fight to feed people.” Nourish California estimates CalFresh keeps nearly 700,000 Californians out of poverty yearly, including more than 300,000 children. The expansion will benefit 75,000 undocumented seniors, but 690,000 to 840,000 Californians remain ineligible for CalFresh solely due to their immigration status. Benyamin Chao, the health and public benefits policy analyst at the California Immigrant Policy Center, said CalFresh mitigates poverty, hunger, and suffering.

“It intervenes in a vicious cycle,” Chao explained. “Having difficulty affording food results in families and households making hard choices, poor nutrition outcomes, poor health outcomes, and that make it

more difficult to escape from food insecurity and poverty.” Mar Velez, state policy senior manager at the Latino Coalition for a Healthy California, said the need is urgent. “There are 2.3 million

undocumented residents in our state,” Velez pointed out. “Two in five, or 45%, experience food insecurity. And nearly two and three, or 63%, of undocumented children, experienced food insecurity.”

Ticket in Illinois won the second-largest Mega Millions jackpot By Desert Star Staff The chase for the secondlargest Mega Millions jackpot has ended with a single ticket sold in the Chicago area for $1.337 billion. According to the Illinois Lotto, one ticket purchased in Des Plaines hit the top prize in Friday night’s drawing. Securing the third-largest jackpot of any United States lottery game and ending an accumulation that began when Mega Millions last drew a jackpot winner in mid-April. The winning ticket was bought at a Speedway gasoline station in Des Plaines, approximately a 20-mile drive northwest of downtown Chicago, the Illinois Lotto said Saturday. “We have actually not heard from the winner. So we don’t understand whether ... they even know they won a prize. So I

encourage everybody to check your ticket,” Illinois Lottery Director Harold Mays informed reporters Saturday morning in Chicago. Lotto operators stated that the jackpot rose to $1.337 billion late Friday, up from an earlier estimate of $1.28 billion. The ticket will yield a onetime payment of about $780 million if the holder picks a lump-sum money option. Otherwise, the almost $1.34 billion reward will be topped a preliminary 29 yearly expenses. Friday night’s winning numbers were 13, 36, 45, 57, 67, and a Mega Ball of 14. Mays said that the Speedway convenience store in Des Plaines would receive $500,000 for selling the winning ticket. Mays said that the ticket holder has a year from the drawing to claim the prize and can choose to withhold

their name from the public. In Illinois, winners of more than $250,000 can ask the lotto to keep their word and hometown confidential. The largest ever Mega Millions jackpot of $1.537

billion was won by a single ticket sold in South Carolina in 2018. That’s the secondlargest jackpot for any United States lottery game, and it’s the world’s largest lottery reward won by just one ticket,

according to Mega Millions. The biggest jackpot of any United States lotto game was $1.586 billion-- a Powerball prize from January 13, 2016, shared by winners in California, Florida, and Tennessee.

HOA Insolvent? A Board Changing Assessment Allocations

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. Dear Kelly, Our HOA has suspended reserve deposits, borrowed from reserves without disclosing to members the full borrowed amount or the repayment plan, and not repaid borrowed funds within the required one year (also without disclosure to homeowners). Even before these actions, the reserve was “materially underfunded” according to the latest reserve studies. Obviously, the red flags are waving wildly, but our board is unwilling to address, or even openly discuss, these financial issues. I’ve tried to work with the board, but my concerns are brushed off. Aside from running for a board position, is there anything a homeowner can do?

larger HOA expenditures. Associations are not required by statute to deposit money in the reserve account, but are required to make very detailed disclosures to members (and, by extension, prospective purchasers) regarding the state of the HOA’s reserve savings. HOAs who are trying to “hold the line” on assessments often do so by halting regular deposits to reserves and instead use that money to help pay ongoing expenses. That creates two problems for the HOA. First, it hides the fact that the budget is inadequate and is not meeting the HOA’s monthly expenses. Farmworker Advocates Fight to Save Community Garden By Desert Star Staff A farmworker group in Watsonville is speaking out after a local church terminated the lease on land used for a community garden. The Tierras Milpitas group has grown food for local families for 12 years on property belonging to the All Saints/Cristo Rey Episcopal Church. After a community outcry, Bishop Lucinda Ashby recently granted a 90-day extension on the lease. Hugo Sanchez-Nava, the community coordinator for Tierras Milperas, wants a meeting with the bishop to clear the air. “Rescinding the lease termination and speaking with our members directly will demonstrate her commitment to making sure the church welcomes all the people in the community no matter

their race, background, history, or culture,” Sanchez-Nava asserted. In the termination letter, the church said the church property recently became unsafe after a church employee was found dead in his car. Police are also investigating an alleged rape and report that someone left drug paraphernalia in the area. The church pastor did not respond to multiple requests for an interview. Carmen Cortez, a Council of Gardeners for Tierras Milpitas, said the threat of eviction is unfair to the 46 families who use the community garden, and they should not be blamed for the incidents. “These concerns they’re raising are grave,” Cortez acknowledged. “And we would have expected them to come to us if they did happen.

However, we are very certain that they have not happened on our side of the fence where we manage our garden. And so we would like to have that

conversation with the bishop.” The bishop’s office said it would allow the families to harvest the current crop if it received a contact list of

Tierras Milperas’ membership. The office added that it would consider a new lease, pending further negotiations.

Riverside native earns qualification aboard oldest warship afloat By Airman Austin Jean, USS Constitution Public Affairs BOSTON – Seaman Christian Cerda, a Riverside, California native, earned his essential interpretive historian qualification aboard USS Constitution on July 28. Duty aboard USS Constitution is one of the Navy’s special programs. Therefore, all prospective crewmembers must meet a high standard of sustained excellence and interview to be selected for the assignment. The basic interpretive historian qualification means that a Sailor has studied and trained on the history of the USS Constitution and has learned about the ship’s major historic battles, its unique design, and the life of a Sailor

during the 19th century. Crew members who achieve the essential interpretive historian are authorized to wear a unique command ball cap, with the word ‘crewmember’ embroidered on the back, in place of the Navy’s standard eight-point cover or hat. “It is an incredible honor to be a part of something bigger and be able to continue the Constitution’s history,” said Cerda. Cerda has served in the Navy for seven months, and USS Constitution is his first duty station. Cerda is a 2021 graduate of Rubidoux High School. The active-duty Sailors stationed aboard USS Constitution provide free tours

and offer public visitation to more than 600,000 people each year. As they support the ship’s mission of promoting the Navy’s history and maritime heritage and raising awareness of the importance of a sustained naval presence.

USS Constitution is the world’s oldest commissioned warship afloat and played a crucial role in the Barbary Wars and the War of 1812, actively defending sea lanes from 1797 to 1855. USS Constitution was

undefeated in battle and captured 33 opponents. The ship earned the nickname of Old Ironsides during the war of 1812 after British cannonballs were seen bouncing off the ship’s wooden hull.

U.S. Postal Service Mechanics Speak Out in Favor of Electrifying Fleet

By Desert Star Staff U.S. Postal Service mechanics are pressing for more electric vehicles in the fleet, as long as the infrastructure to support them is expanded. The Postal Service is ready to buy about 85,000 vehicles to replace an aging fleet, and 40% will be electric. Sal Zapien, motor vehicle craft director in San Jose for USPS and a member of the American Postal Workers Union Local 73, said it is a big job trying to maintain the existing vehicles, many of which date back to the 1990s. “We have our technicians making sure these old, depleted 30-year-vehicles are smogged,” Zapien explained. “And if the catalytic converters are working properly, the vehicles are tuned up properly, so we can eliminate the carbon footprint we’re

putting into the system.” The U.S. Postal Service initially said that only 10% of its new vehicles would be electric. The agency will hold a public hearing on the topic on August 8. Several environmental groups are suing the Postal Service, hoping to force it to prioritize clean air and the battle against climate change rather than solely focusing on the bottom line. Zapien predicts that many postal properties will need to be expanded to make room for EV charging stations. He noted that some stations could be open to the public, which would serve as a way to generate revenue. “There are some stations that will be impossible to put charging stations there because there’s no room to park the vehicle,” Zapien pointed out. “You

need a special area with all the access to hook them up to charging ports.” In June, the Biden administration launched

a plan to install 500,000 electric-vehicle charging stations across the country. Disclosure: American Postal Workers Union

By Desert Star Staff OASIS – FIND Food Bank and the Coachella Valley Unified School District have stepped up to make bottled water and shower facilities available for families at Oasis

Mobile Home Park. The latter lack clean water for drinking, bathing, and cooking. Since Thursday, FIND Food Bank has been distributing bottled water to residents. FIND Food Bank

held another distribution this afternoon and will continue to help with distributions planned over the weekend. Starting Sunday, the Coachella Valley Unified School District will make

its shower facilities at the Desert Mirage High School gym and locker room area available for residents of Oasis Mobile Home Park. The showers will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily through August 7. Residents should bring their own hygiene products and towels. “We received notice that residents and students from Oasis were having a hardship with the water issues that are unfortunately happening at Oasis Mobile Home Park,” said Coachella Valley Unified School District Board of Trustees President Blanca Hall. “The Coachella Valley Unified School District is willing and available to provide services and support that our residents and students need.” “We are saddened by the situation but glad that we can support our community, students, and families and serve in whichever way necessary,” stated Coachella Valley Unified School

District Superintendent Dr. Luis Valentino. Supervisor V. Manuel Perez continues to coordinate with county departments, community agencies, and others to mobilize resources to assist with the water crisis at Oasis Mobile Home Park. Residents received a notice from the park owners that the water from the park’s water system should not be used for any purpose, including drinking, bathing, cooking, and brushing one’s teeth. “I am grateful for our community partners, the Coachella Valley Unified School District and FIND Food Bank, for helping the community as much as possible,” said Supervisor Perez. “These resources will help residents lacking safe water to have water for their families and a safe place to shower. Thank you again to these agencies for all they are doing to support the community.”

You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid on a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of the outstanding lien that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 844-477-7869, or visit this internet Web site www.stoxposting.com, using the file number assigned to this case T.S.# 85902. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.” For sales conducted after January 1, 2021: NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (844) 477-7869, or visit this internet website www.STOXPOSTING.com, using the file number assigned to this case 85902 to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid; by remitting the funds and affidavit described in Section 2924m(c) of the Civil Code; so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. SIXTH STREET, CORONA, CA 92882 Per the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, the estimated opening bid will be $345,506.04. There will be no proration of taxes, rents or other income or liabilities, except that the purchaser will pay, at or before closing, his pro rata share of any real estate taxes that have been paid by the Secretary to the date of the foreclosure sale. When making their bids, the winning bidders with the exception of the Secretary must submit a deposit totaling ten percent (10%) of the Secretary’s estimated bid amount in the form of a certified check or cashier’s check made payable to the undersigned Foreclosure Commissioner. Ten percent of the estimated bid amount for this sale is $34,550.60. A deposit need not accompany each oral bid. The remainder of the purchase price must be delivered within 30 days of the sale or at such other time as the Secretary may determine for good cause shown, time being of the essence. The successful bidder will pay all conveying fees, all real estate and other taxes that are due on or after the delivery date of the remainder of the payment and all other costs associated with the transfer of title. At the conclusion of the sale, the deposits of the unsuccessful bidders will be returned to them. The Secretary may grant an extension of time within which to deliver the remainder of the payment. If the high bidder closes the sale prior to the expiration of any extension period, the unused portion of the extension fee shall be applied toward the amount due. If the high bidder is unable to close the sale within the required period, or within any extensions of time granted by the Secretary, the high bidder may be required to forfeit the cash deposit or, at the election of the Foreclosure Commissioner after consultation with the HUD representative, will be liable to HUD for any costs incurred as a result of such failure. The Commissioner may, at the direction of the HUD representative, offer the property to the second highest bidder for an amount equal to the highest price offered by that bidder. There is no right of redemption, or right of possession based upon a right of redemption, in the mortgagor or others subsequent to a foreclosure completed pursuant to the Act. Therefore, the Foreclosure Commissioner will issue a Deed to the purchaser(s) upon receipt of the entire purchase price in accordance with the terms of the sale as provided herein. HUD does not guarantee that the property will be vacant. The scheduled foreclosure sale shall be cancelled or adjourned if it is established, by documented written application of the mortgagor to the Foreclosure Commissioner not less than 3 days before the date of sale, or otherwise, that the default or defaults upon which the foreclosure is based did not exist at the time of service of this notice of default and foreclosure sale, or all amounts due under the mortgage agreement are tendered to the Foreclosure Commissioner, in the form of a certified or cashier’s check payable to the Secretary of HUD, before public auction of the property is completed. The amount that must be paid if the Mortgage Deed of Trust is to be reinstated prior to the scheduled sale is based on the nature of the breach, this loan is not subject to reinstatement. A total payoff is required to cancel the foreclosure sale or the breach must be otherwise cured. A description of the default is as follows: FAILURE TO PAY THE PRINCIPAL BALANCE AND ANY OUTSTANDING FEES, COSTS, AND INTEREST WHICH BECAME ALL DUE AND PAYABLE BASED UPON THE DEATH OF ALL MORTGAGORS. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (855) 976-3916 or visit this Internet Web site https:// tracker.auction.com/sb1079, using the file number assigned to this case FHAD.077-273. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. For sales conducted after January 1, 2021: NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (855) 976-3916, or visit this internet website https://tracker.auction.com/ sb1079, using the file number assigned to this case FHAD.077-273 to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. 5 Ways to Support Teachers this Fall

T

FAMILY FEATURES

hroughout the pandemic, teachers have gone above and beyond for their students, becoming not just educators, but also counselors, role models and friends to their students by supporting their overall well-being. Even so, only 52% of teachers feel valued by their communities, according to PDK International, a professional association for educators. What’s more, teachers are more burnt out than ever, with 81% reporting their workloads have increased and 55% sharing they have less time for planning than before, according to a State of Teaching survey conducted by Adopt a Classroom. Heading back to school means stocking up on supplies, updating wardrobes and planning new routines for hassle-free mornings. This fall, as you prepare for the new school year, consider these ideas for supporting your children’s teachers, too:

Volunteer in the Classroom

With the extra roles and responsibilities many teachers have taken on in recent years, there aren’t enough hours in the day to complete special projects or keep up with certain tasks. Ask teachers how you can lend a hand. That might mean spending some time physically in the classroom, or there may be ways you can support your children’s classes from home, such as assembling instructional packets or researching field trip ideas.

Recognize Teachers Who Go Above and Beyond

Chances are good you know at least a few educators who have gone beyond the call of duty and made an exceptional impact on their students. Honoring their contributions shows appreciation for all they do. One way to demonstrate your gratitude is by nominating educators for Staples’ fourth annual #ThankATeacher contest, which recognizes 20 stand-out educators who go above and beyond for their students. Winners’ schools will be awarded $5,000 in classroom essentials for the upcoming school year. Learn more about how to nominate a teacher at staplesconnect.com/thankateacher.1

Be a Partner in Your Child’s Learning at Home

Supporting teachers isn’t just about the classroom and supplies; you can also provide a helping hand by creating good habits and modeling the importance of education at home. Actions like creating routines that keep students on a comfortable, familiar schedule help teachers manage classrooms more effectively. You can also make communication with your children’s teachers a priority so you’re aware of concerns and can help address them early.

Donate School Supplies

12

Often, teachers dip into their own income to create fun, engaging learning experiences and supplement student supplies when they run low. In fact, the average teacher spends $745 on supplies for their classrooms that are not covered by school budgets. According to Adopt a Classroom’s State of Teaching survey, 71% of teachers spent more of their own money on classroom materials in 2022 than during the previous year. You can ask teachers what supplies they need, or you can give back to teachers through Staples’

Classroom Rewards program. Join for free and earn 5% back on every qualifying purchase for you and 10% back of qualifying purchases to donate to local teachers. The program helps reduce teachers’ out of pocket costs for their classrooms by allowing them to earn up to $2,000 a year.

Attend School Board Meetings and Voice Support

Keeping tabs on the issues affecting your school district and teachers is an important part of monitoring and advocating for your children’s education, but it’s also a way for you to lend your support on topics affecting teachers. Stay informed about issues that matter to your children’s teachers and support school board policies and actions that serve teachers’ best interests. NO PURCHASE NECESSARY. Void where prohibited. Open to 50 U.S./D.C., 18 or older as of date of entry who possess a web-enabled mobile device as of July 24, 2022. Begins 12:00 am ET on July 25, 2022 and ends 11:59 pm ET on August 15, 2022.
