The College of the Desert (COD) Performing Arts Department is presenting Stephen Sondheim’s musical comedy “A Little Night Music”, directed by Sha Newman; with musical direction by Dr. Darlene Romano of COD.
The musical, which enjoyed a long engagement of Broadway, is a favorite production of Regional Theatres, Colleges and Community Theatres across the country. Starring in the COD production in the role of Madame Armfedt is singer and comedienne Mimi Hines. Ms Hines is a veteran of Broadway, who replaced Barbra Streisand in “Funny Girl” and kept the showing running for an additional 18 months. In television, Ms. Hines has made many appearances on various series, and most recently was seen as Mrs. Latimer, a recurring role on Kelsey Grammer’s TV show “Fraser”.
“A Little Night Music” tells the story of a middle-age lawyer, his young wife, and his former mistress, invited guests, and family members who gather for a weekend in the country. It’s a musical comedy romp with a twist. Director Sha Newman has updated the story setting of Victorian Europe, moving it to mid-twentieth century Palm Springs.
“We are thrilled that Ms. Hines will play our Madame Armfeldt, said Dr. Romano. “Our students will have the amazing opportunity of performing with and learning from a true professional of the stage.” Ms. Hines will also give a presentation about her life and work to music and theatre majors at COD.
“A Little Night Music”, at the McCallum Theatre, Palm Desert, opens Thursday, May 2nd at 7 pm, and performs Friday and Saturday, May 3rd and 4th at 8 pm, and Sunday, May 5th at 2 pm. Tickets are available at the McCallum Theatre Box Office, at 760-340-2728, or by going online to www.mccallumtheatre.com.
